SDP Faction Alleges Plot to Hijack Party, Rejects Anti-Tinubu Coalition

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), led by Chief Wole Adesina, has raised the alarm over two unfolding developments it says are threatening the party’s unity and integrity.

In a statement issued on Monday by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Alfa Mohammed, the group condemned the growing influx of aggrieved politicians forming a coalition purportedly aimed at removing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from office, without offering a credible alternative agenda for national transformation.

“The influx of some aggrieved politicians in a desperate coalition to ‘send President Bola Ahmed Tinubu back to Lagos’ without showcasing any clear-cut alternative agenda for Nigeria’s transformation is worrisome,” Mohammed stated.

He stressed that the SDP is neither for sale nor lease and will not be part of any anti-government plot lacking a defined vision for the country’s progress.

While pledging to continue constructive engagement with the federal government and hold it accountable where necessary, the Adesina-led NEC dissociated itself from any coalition seeking to derail the current administration or undermine the will of Nigerian voters expressed in the 2023 general elections.

The faction further alleged that some elements within the coalition group, in collaboration with a rival SDP faction, have begun illegally replacing constitutionally recognized state executives—an action the NEC strongly condemned.

“This mirrors the 2019 crisis when defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party, led by Prof. Jerry Gana, attempted to seize the party’s leadership. That episode resulted in the resignation of then National Chairman, Olu Falae, and a wave of legal battles that persist to this day,” the statement noted.

The NEC urged SDP leaders across all levels to resist any attempts to usurp their positions and report such cases to the appropriate authorities. Mohammed also encouraged members to remain calm, assuring them that efforts to reclaim full recognition from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are ongoing.

“The party’s doors remain open to genuinely intentioned new members,” he added.
