Rivers PDP Crisis: NWC Backs Fubara, Supports Okoye After Court Ruling

0

Some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have expressed their support for the recent court ruling that nullified the party’s congresses in Rivers State. The NWC members showed their full backing for Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers during a visit to his office at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Wednesday night, where they also held a closed-door meeting with the governor.

Umar Damagum, the acting National Chairman of the PDP, clarified that the NWC has not yet convened to address the court ruling concerning the Rivers State Executives, contrary to statements made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba.

After the meeting, Ahmed Mohammed, the National Treasurer, reaffirmed Fubara’s position as the leader of the party in Rivers State. He described the visit as part of the NWC’s efforts to realign the party and strategize for the 2027 elections. Mohammed emphasized the NWC’s commitment to fostering unity, stability, and effective repositioning within the state.

The NWC also extended its support to Ude Okoye, who was recently reinstated as the party’s National Secretary by the Court of Appeal. Mohammed urged party stakeholders and governors to unite in backing Okoye for the continued progress of the party.

This visit follows a recent meeting of PDP Youth leaders from across the country with Fubara, aimed at resolving internal party crises and affirming his leadership in the state.

The court ruling that nullified the Ward, Local, and State congresses—won by allies of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike—has created significant divisions within the party. The congresses, held last year, were marred by conflicting court orders, with a State High Court issuing a restraining order on the exercise while a Federal High Court permitted it. In the wake of the nullification, an interim committee has emerged to oversee the leadership of the party in Rivers State.
