The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has inaugurated a nine-member committee to probe the bombing of its state secretariat on October 5, 2024. The explosion, believed to have been caused by dynamite, occurred early in the morning at the APC Secretariat on Aba Road, coinciding with the state’s local government elections.
Rivers APC Chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, announced the formation of the committee, which is headed by the party’s Legal Adviser, Kelechi Nwuzi. The committee has been tasked with investigating both the immediate and remote causes of the attack and is expected to submit its findings within one month.
Okocha expressed concerns over the state government’s failure to address the bombing despite calls for action and described the government’s Judicial Commission of Inquiry into election-related violence as politically motivated. He emphasized that the APC’s committee would conduct an impartial investigation into the incident, which caused significant damage to the secretariat, including the destruction of the gate, windows, and a security post. Witnesses reported seeing three black Toyota Hilux vans fleeing the scene.
