Rauf Olaniyan Opens Up: Impeachment, Political Agendas, and the Road Ahead for Oyo State

0

In a candid interview with Wale Akinselure, former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Rauf Olaniyan, shares the unspoken truth behind his controversial impeachment in 2022, his relationship with Governor Seyi Makinde, and the political landscape of Oyo State as the 2027 election approaches.

Olaniyan, who was removed from office on July 18, 2022, following allegations of disloyalty and financial mismanagement, insists his departure from the office was not borne out of bitterness. He describes the impeachment process as a result of “irreconcilable differences” and dismisses the accusations as concoctions designed to tarnish his reputation. Despite the challenges, Olaniyan holds no animosity toward Makinde, maintaining a cordial relationship, even after their public fallout.

Reflecting on his political journey, Olaniyan asserts that he never harbored ambitions to oust Makinde, emphasizing his long-standing experience in the political sphere. He reveals that his decision to become Makinde’s running mate for the 2019 election was not out of a desire for political power, but rather based on a shared vision for Oyo State. However, his tenure as Deputy Governor was marked by internal power struggles and behind-the-scenes intrigue, with political opponents seeking to weaken his position.

Olaniyan further discusses his transition to the All Progressives Congress (APC) post-impeachment, explaining that his decision was driven by a desire to remain politically active. He strongly defends Oke-Ogun’s political aspirations, highlighting the region’s demand for a shot at the governorship in 2027. With 10 local governments in Oke-Ogun, Olaniyan argues that it is time for the region to have its turn at the state’s highest office, especially considering the historical political dominance of Ibadan and Ogbomoso.

On the issue of his own future in politics, Olaniyan remains uncertain but leaves the door open to the possibility of contesting the governorship in 2027. He also comments on the national political scene, expressing support for Governor Makinde’s potential presidential bid in 2027 but acknowledging the formidable challenge posed by President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

As Nigerians face economic hardship under the current administration, Olaniyan offers a measured view, comparing the nation’s challenges to the process of making an omelette, suggesting that enduring temporary difficulties is necessary for long-term progress. He also defends the controversial tax reform bill, calling it a “fantastic” step toward finding new solutions to Nigeria’s financial issues.

As Oyo State’s political future looms, Olaniyan’s insights shed light on the intricacies of political loyalty, ambition, and the power struggles that continue to shape the region.
