The Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has dismissed as false recent reports suggesting that former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was involved in the struggle for the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
In a statement on Tuesday, POMR spokesman Ibrahim Umar urged Nigerians to disregard the claims, describing them as “malicious fabrications” aimed at tarnishing Obi’s image.
“For the umpteenth time, blackmailers have resurrected a fictitious and malicious write-up, hoping to use it to damage the rising political profile of Peter Obi,” Umar stated.
According to POMR, Obi was neither directly nor indirectly involved in the June 12 struggle. Instead, he voted for the late MKO Abiola and later relocated to the United Kingdom with his family to establish his business.
The reports, which previously surfaced in 2023 under different titles, have been circulated again on social media. Umar asserted that they are the work of “well-mobilized mercenaries” attempting to distort history and undermine Obi’s growing political reputation.
“As of 1993, Obi was not a politician but an admirer of Abiola, whom he supported through the late Senate President, Dr. Chuba Okadigbo. Even during his university days in Nsukka, he was known more as a student entrepreneur than a political activist,” the statement added.
POMR reaffirmed Obi’s reputation as a democrat committed to the rule of law and urged the public to ignore attempts to rewrite history with false narratives.
