The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, has dismissed speculations that former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has defected from the Labour Party.
Tanko, speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Monday, firmly stated that Obi remains a member of the Labour Party, countering reports suggesting the politician is considering joining the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
“As far as I am concerned, His Excellency Peter Obi is a member of the Labour Party. It remains so until when there is any other thing that may come up,” Tanko said.
He further clarified that the party leadership is expected to convene a meeting within the week to address key concerns arising from the recent Supreme Court ruling that invalidated Julius Abure’s position as Labour Party national chairman.
“There is going to be a meeting possibly within the week by the leaders of the party to make fundamental positions clear to everyone, in line with the position of the Supreme Court ruling. That will put the whole matter to rest,” Tanko assured.
His remarks follow a claim by former SDP presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, that both Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar are in talks with the SDP ahead of a potential realignment.
The Obidient Movement, however, reaffirmed its loyalty to Obi and dismissed the alleged discussions as mere political speculation.
This clarification comes amid rising political tension within the Labour Party, particularly over leadership disputes and future alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
