The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed disinterest in any coalition solely aimed at seizing power without prioritizing the well-being of Nigerians. Obi emphasized that addressing the country’s challenges and improving the lives of its citizens should take precedence over political power struggles.
Speaking on Monday in Abuja during a national conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria, Obi described the nation as one that “breeds poverty every day,” highlighting the plight of ordinary Nigerians who are suffering under current conditions. The event, themed “Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy: Pathways to Good Governance and Political Integrity,” was organized by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development (Centre LSD), the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), Westminster for Democracy (WfD), Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA), and the National Peace Committee.
Addressing journalists on the sidelines of the conference, Obi underscored the importance of putting Nigeria’s future first. “For me, what is important is let’s discuss Nigeria. Whether we are going to do a coalition, let’s talk about the future of the country,” he stated. “But often, we abandon the country and focus on power grabs. I’m not interested in any coalition for the purpose of taking power.”
The former Anambra State governor stressed the need to address pressing issues such as national security, access to quality education, and the welfare of citizens. “It is about discussing Nigeria. How do we care about securing Nigerians? How do we care about the common person in Nigeria? How do we care about our children being in school? That is the most important thing for now,” he said.
Obi also called for an end to the monetization of politics, which he described as a major driver of corruption in the country. “We need to remove that, because what you’re doing is encouraging the stealing of public money. If I steal and use it to win an election, I get all the power and immunity, including protection from prosecution. That must stop,” he added.
The conference brought together political leaders, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to explore pathways toward good governance and political integrity in Nigeria.
