Peter Obi Alleges Threats to Life Over Criticism of Tinubu’s Administration

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has claimed his life is under threat following his critical stance on the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Obi disclosed that recent remarks by Felix Morka, the National Spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC), have escalated the situation.

Morka had accused Obi of having “crossed the line so many times” and suggested the politician “has it coming to him whatever he gets.”

Reacting to the comment, Obi expressed concern over what he described as Nigeria’s descent into authoritarianism, where freedom of expression is being curtailed. He emphasized his commitment to speaking the truth despite the risks.

“Have I really crossed the line?” Obi questioned in his post. “My New Year message has now led to threats against my life, my family, and those around me. While I have received all sorts of messages, one Mr. Felix Morka has gone further to accuse me of ‘crossing the line’ and has warned that I will face the consequences.”

He urged his critics to provide evidence of his alleged misconduct, asserting that he remains committed to upholding civility and decorum in his communications.

Obi further shared concerns about Nigeria’s political climate, stating:

“We are increasingly transforming into an authoritarian and repressive regime, where freedom of expression is being systematically suppressed. May God help us create a better and freer society for the sake of our children.”

The former presidential candidate also encouraged Nigerians to revisit his New Year message, which he claimed has been misrepresented. The video is available on his YouTube channel for public review.

Obi’s statements have sparked widespread reactions, further fueling ongoing debates about governance, freedom of speech, and democratic practices in the country.
