The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its primary political objective for the 2027 general elections: ensuring President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not re-elected.
This was revealed on Monday by the State Caretaker Committee Chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Benin City. The gathering brought together party leaders, supporters, and critical stakeholders.
Aziegbemi, speaking in the wake of last Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling which affirmed the candidacy of Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the September 2024 Edo governorship election, said the PDP must now focus its energy on uniting for a bigger national task.
“The next thing I am urging every one of us, on behalf of PDP in Edo State, is how to get Tinubu out of the presidency in 2027. That is our next target,” Aziegbemi stated.
He accused the current administration of economic mismanagement, stressing that Nigerians could no longer endure the prevailing hardship. “We cannot continue with this suffering. We charge you not to be deterred,” he said.
However, the call to action was met with cautious realism from some members, including former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Barr. Jimoh Ijegbai. He expressed concern over the PDP’s internal divisions, warning that the party may not be in the right shape to mount a credible challenge.
Ijegbai noted that parallel nominations for upcoming legislative by-elections and ongoing factional disputes could weaken the party’s chances if not addressed.
“We will be deceiving ourselves to still think that we have a party that we are going to use as of today. A house divided against itself cannot stand,” he said.
He urged party leaders to address the internal cracks and avoid another round of legal battles that have historically distracted and derailed the party’s progress.
As the PDP charts a course toward 2027, party insiders are calling for urgent reconciliation, unity of purpose, and a strategic roadmap to reposition the party nationally and within Edo State.
