PDP Slams APC Over Gombe Brawl, Warns Against Normalising Political Violence

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the violent disruption of the North-East Consultative Meeting held in Gombe State on Sunday, describing the incident as a reflection of deep-rooted discord within the ruling party.

The clash, which has sparked widespread public criticism, reportedly stemmed from internal wrangling among APC governors in the North-East over succession plans and the future of Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speculations suggest that President Bola Tinubu may consider dropping Shettima as his running mate in the next election cycle, intensifying political friction within the region.

In an exclusive interview with Vanguard on Tuesday, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, expressed concerns over the broader implications of the APC’s internal crisis, warning that such incidents could normalize political violence in Nigeria.

“While we in the PDP welcome the exposure of APC’s internal crisis, we remain committed to peaceful and issue-based politics,” Osadolor said. “We urge the APC to refrain from actions that encourage or normalize violence within the political space.”

He accused some APC leaders of fueling tensions with “careless talks and unconscionable acts,” noting that their conduct poses a threat to Nigeria’s democratic values.

“How do you go to a man’s place—Shettima’s North-East base—and attempt to undermine him, then expect his people to remain silent?” Osadolor queried.

He reiterated that the PDP is not concerned with the internal workings of the APC but is alarmed by the potential ripple effects of the ruling party’s conduct on the political climate nationwide.

“We don’t want a situation where their violent tendencies influence the general public into believing that violence is a legitimate part of politics,” he warned.

Calling for restraint and responsible leadership, Osadolor urged APC officials to set a better example for young Nigerians and politically active citizens.

“Younger Nigerians are watching, and if party leaders behave recklessly, it sends the wrong message. Political violence must not be normalized,” he added.

Despite the tension, Osadolor acknowledged that the APC’s internal strife could benefit the opposition. “We are happy they are exposing their disunity. May their confusion as a party continue,” he remarked.

As Nigeria edges closer to the 2027 elections, the PDP emphasized its dedication to non-violence and its focus on addressing the real issues affecting citizens, urging all political actors to put national interest above personal ambitions.
