PDP Rocked as Four Senators Join APC, Boosting Senate Majority

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) suffered a major blow on Wednesday as four of its senators officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing irreconcilable differences within the opposition party.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the lawmakers’ letters of defection during plenary and directed the Clerk of the Senate to formally document the switch.

The defections further strengthen the APC’s hold on the upper chamber, increasing its seat count to 70, while the PDP drops to 28. Other parties in the Senate now include Labour Party (5), NNPP (1), SDP (2), and APGA (1).

In a show of solidarity, APC National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, former Minister of Labour and Productivity Senator Chris Ngige, and some members of the House of Representatives were present in the chamber.

The mass defection marks a new phase in the political realignments shaping the countdown to the 2027 elections.
