The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger State has strongly opposed the appointment of a former All Progressives Congress (APC) state chairman, Engr. Mohammed Jibrin Imam, as the chairman of the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC).
In a statement signed by Yahaya Ability, the party’s State Vice Chairman and Zonal Chairman for Niger North Senatorial District, the PDP condemned the decision, arguing that it compromises electoral neutrality and public trust.
Citing past administrations, the PDP noted that previous NSIEC chairpersons were neutral civil servants, ensuring credible elections. Ability referenced appointments under former Governors Abdulkadir Kure, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, and Abubakar Sani Bello, all of whom selected non-partisan individuals for the role.
“Why is your own different, imposing your will on the people without carrying everyone along?” Ability questioned, addressing Governor Mohammed Umar Bago.
The opposition party maintained that appointing a known APC figure to oversee state elections undermines democratic principles and discourages fair competition.
“No opposition party can confidently participate in elections under an electoral body led by a member of the ruling party,” the statement read.
The PDP called on Governor Bago to reverse the appointment to restore public confidence and ensure a level playing field for all political parties.
Governor Bago had appointed Imam alongside six others to the commission, including Barr. M.A. Liman (Permanent Commissioner I), Nasiru Ubandiya (Permanent Commissioner II), Yahaya Idris Abara (Permanent Commissioner III), Capt. Mohammed Baro (Permanent Commissioner IV), Kabiru Tanko Zama (Permanent Commissioner V), Barr. Amina Guar (Permanent Commissioner VI), and Barr. Ahmed Borgu (Permanent Commissioner VII).
The appointments are subject to confirmation by the Niger State House of Assembly.
