Despite recent defections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not in crisis, according to the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, who leads the PDP caucus in the Red Chamber. Addressing journalists on Tuesday after plenary, Moro dismissed speculations of the party’s collapse, affirming that the PDP remains strong and is actively reorganizing for the 2027 general elections.
He described the recent challenges facing the party as part of the normal dynamics in a democratic setting, stating that there is no indication the PDP will not weather the storm.
“Contrary to rumours making the rounds, the PDP has not collapsed,” Moro said. “Even in the Senate, we still have former governors who remain committed members of the PDP. They have not defected and are standing firm with us.”
According to him, a series of strategic activities have been lined up to reposition and revitalize the party ahead of 2027. Among these efforts is the constitution of a high-level reconciliation committee chaired by former Senate President and ex-Governor of Kwara State, Dr. Bukola Saraki.
Moro expressed confidence in Saraki’s ability to reconcile aggrieved members and rebuild unity within the party.
When asked about reports that former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar is courting Labour Party’s Peter Obi for a possible running mate ticket in 2027, Moro described the move as a welcome development. He noted that political coalitions are a normal part of Nigeria’s evolving democratic process and could strengthen the opposition’s chances in the next general elections.
