Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have strongly denied speculations that five of their members are backing a potential Nasir El-Rufai/Peter Obi presidential ticket for the 2027 election.
The PDP Governors’ Forum, led by its chairman and Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, dismissed the claims in a statement signed by the forum’s Director-General, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, on Saturday.
Describing the reports as “unpleasant and provoking,” the forum accused certain political actors of attempting to sow discord within the opposition party.
“The PDP Governors’ Forum vehemently denounces these misleading publications and rumors being spread by negative forces who are threatened by the remarkable performance of our governors despite the economic challenges imposed by the ruling party,” the statement read.
The forum further alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is financing factions within the PDP to destabilize the opposition and weaken Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
“These mischief makers, bewildered by the way PDP Governors are delivering on governance, are resorting to baseless propaganda. Their goal is to split the opposition and create a one-party state through manipulation and misinterpretation of the law,” the statement added.
The PDP governors reaffirmed their commitment to party unity and electoral integrity, vowing to support whoever emerges as the party’s candidate in 2027 to challenge what they described as the “non-performance” of the APC-led federal government.
“As disciplined leaders and stakeholders, we will stand firmly behind our party’s chosen flag-bearer to reclaim power and restore effective governance,” the statement concluded.
