The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has strongly criticized Governor Alex Otti for his alleged attempt to reduce the tenure of elected Local Government Chairmen from four years to two through the State House of Assembly.
In a statement issued by the state PDP chairman, Elder Abraham Amah, the party described the move as unconstitutional, undemocratic, and a direct attack on the rule of law. The opposition party urged Governor Otti to reconsider the decision and instead focus on addressing critical issues affecting Abia residents.
The PDP called on civil society organizations and the general public to resist any action that undermines democratic principles, warning that such a move could erode the integrity of governance. It further urged the State House of Assembly to reject the proposal, emphasizing that altering the tenure of duly elected officials mid-term would amount to an abuse of power.
“Your Excellency, how would you feel if the President of Nigeria initiated steps to cut the tenure of Governors from four years to two? Would you not resist such a proposal as an attack on democracy?” the statement read.
The party argued that democracy thrives on stability and adherence to established laws. It accused the Otti-led administration of attempting to manipulate the electoral system for political gain, warning that such actions set a dangerous precedent that could destabilize governance at all levels.
According to the PDP, should the state government succeed in this move, it could open the door for future leaders to arbitrarily shorten gubernatorial tenures, just as it is attempting with local government officials.
The opposition party also called on Governor Otti to focus on delivering his campaign promises, particularly addressing unpaid pensions and salary arrears, rather than engaging in what it described as an unconstitutional maneuver.
“Leadership is measured by fairness, transparency, and accountability—not by manipulating democratic institutions for political convenience,” the statement concluded. “History will judge this administration by the decisions it makes today.”
