The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the state government, led by Governor Alex Otti, of orchestrating efforts to suppress opposition activities and stifle democratic engagement.
This comes in response to a recent statement by the state government raising concerns over a political gathering held at the residence of former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu in Obingwa Local Government Area.
In a press release issued on Tuesday and signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Eric Ikwuagwu, the PDP described the government’s stance as a calculated attempt to intimidate the opposition. The party argued that there is no legal basis for the government’s claim, emphasizing that Nigerian law guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and political expression.
“Dr. Ikpeazu has every right, both constitutionally and morally, to assemble with his supporters and discuss political matters, especially in his own residence,” the statement read. “What Otti’s government has maliciously labeled as ‘unlawful political campaigning’ is nothing more than opposition political engagement—an essential pillar of any thriving democracy.”
The PDP also accused the state government of adopting a double standard in its response to political gatherings. According to the party, several civic receptions, thanksgiving services, and town hall meetings have taken place in the state—many of which had Governor Otti in attendance—without any outcry from authorities.
While denying that former Governor Ikpeazu made any inciting remarks during the meeting, the PDP vowed that it would not be cowed into silence. The party likened the treatment of Ikpeazu to the post-office challenges faced by former President Goodluck Jonathan, saying the pattern of political persecution was all too familiar.
“The attempt to vilify Dr. Ikpeazu mirrors what former President Jonathan endured from his successor. This shows a troubling trend of democratic intolerance,” the statement added.
The development marks another chapter in the ongoing political tension in Abia State, as the PDP remains firm in its opposition role ahead of the 2027 general elections.
