PDP Accuses APC of Plotting One-Party State, Warns of “Clear and Present Danger” to Democracy

ABUJA — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of systematically pushing Nigeria toward a totalitarian one-party state, warning that the trend poses a grave threat to democracy and national stability.

The opposition party’s position was contained in a communique issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, after the 102nd meeting of its National Executive Committee (NEC) held in Abuja.

According to the statement, the APC has resorted to what it described as “state capture,” deploying intimidation, inducement, coercion, and violence to silence opposition voices and subvert the will of Nigerians.

The PDP cited the conduct of recent bye-elections in parts of the country as evidence of what it termed “a clear and present danger,” particularly condemning what it called the militarisation of the polls.

“Excessive security agencies were deployed in the conduct of run-off election in only five polling units in Kaura Namoda South state constituency in Zamfara State,” the NEC noted, also raising concerns over similar developments in Kaduna and Taraba states.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic process while pledging to “reposition the PDP to reclaim power in 2027.”

“We remain committed to democracy and the defense of the interest and wellbeing of all citizens as we work hard to further reposition our party to regain power in 2027,” the statement added.
