The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to halt what it describes as a politically motivated attack against former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, and instead focus on pressing challenges within the Senate.
In a statement released on Friday in Abuja, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, alleged that Akpabio is orchestrating a smear campaign to discredit the opposition party by spreading falsehoods against Emmanuel.
“Our party is aware of a well-oiled scheme reportedly engineered by the Senate President to compromise a section of the media to spread false allegations against Udom Emmanuel,” Ologunagba stated.
He further claimed that part of the alleged scheme includes falsely linking Emmanuel to an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) indictment and circulating misleading financial figures to tarnish his reputation.
The PDP defended the former governor’s legacy, describing him as a transparent and service-driven leader who made significant strides in infrastructure, education, healthcare, aviation, power, housing, and economic development.
“It is on record that Udom Emmanuel served meritoriously as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, leaving behind an impeccable record in governance and prudent resource management,” the statement read.
The party urged Akpabio to refrain from what it called political intimidation and instead focus on addressing pressing legislative concerns.
“Senator Akpabio should leave Udom Emmanuel alone and focus on the many challenges facing him in the Senate,” the PDP asserted.
Reaffirming its commitment to good governance, the PDP vowed to resist any form of misinformation and political maneuvering aimed at undermining its members.
