Oyo PDP Slams APC for Praising Minister Over UCH Power Restoration

0

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State has strongly criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for commending the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, over his intervention in restoring electricity to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the PDP described the APC’s reaction as politically opportunistic and detached from the real challenges facing Oyo State residents.

The APC had earlier lauded Chief Adelabu, stating that his swift action in resolving UCH’s electricity disconnection—caused by alleged debts to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) was proof of the Tinubu administration’s commitment to its Renewed Hope agenda. The party also thanked President Bola Tinubu for granting the minister the authority to intervene, arguing that the move would improve healthcare services at the hospital.

However, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser on Media to the Oyo State Governor, dismissed the APC’s claims, emphasizing that the issue stemmed from the federal government’s failure to fulfill its promise of subsidizing electricity costs for hospitals.

“If the federal government had honored its commitment to subsidize electricity, would UCH have faced disconnection in the first place?” Olanrewaju questioned.

He further accused the APC of shifting blame onto the state government for a crisis created by federal authorities. The PDP also challenged the consistency of Chief Adelabu’s interventions, asking whether similar actions would be taken at other federal institutions across the country, such as the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) or the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

“Is the minister’s role limited to Oyo State while ignoring similar challenges elsewhere? Governance requires systemic solutions, not temporary fixes,” Olanrewaju added.

Expressing frustration over the APC’s response, he criticized the party for allegedly exploiting the situation for political gain rather than focusing on long-term solutions.

“It is unfortunate that the APC is shamelessly celebrating its role in the UCH-IBEDC crisis instead of accepting responsibility and seeking real solutions,” he remarked.

The PDP reaffirmed its commitment to addressing issues at their root rather than implementing superficial fixes.

“In Oyo State, we don’t paper over the cracks; we go to the roots of problems to find permanent solutions,” the party stated.

Olanrewaju concluded by emphasizing that the people of Oyo State deserve leadership that prioritizes their well-being and addresses systemic challenges rather than engaging in political grandstanding.
