Osun PDP Insists LG Polls Will Hold, As Court Ruling Sparks Political Tensions

0

The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has assured residents that preparations for the February 22 local government elections remain on track, despite a recent Court of Appeal ruling that overturned an earlier decision by the Osogbo Federal High Court.

In a statement on Monday, PDP state chairman, Sunday Bisi, dismissed claims by the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) that the appellate court ruling had halted the elections. He urged Osun residents to remain calm and resist what he described as attempts by the APC to derail democracy.

“Nothing has changed. We are fully prepared for the upcoming election. We have activated our legal team to challenge the judgment at the Supreme Court,” Bisi stated. “We must stand against the APC’s shenanigans, just as we did in the 2022 elections.”

Meanwhile, the Action Peoples Party (APP) in the state has reaffirmed that the 2022 Osun local government election remains nullified and is unaffected by the Court of Appeal’s latest decision.

APP state chairman, Odesola Oluseye Titus, clarified in a separate statement on Monday that speculation regarding the reinstatement of previously elected officials was unfounded.

“The judgment delivered in the case filed by APP against APC and OSSIEC on November 30, 2022, remains unchanged. There is no court order reinstating any ‘Yes or No’ election candidates,” he stated, urging residents to participate actively in the upcoming polls.

Osun Assembly Warns of Alleged APC Plot to Incite Violence

Amid rising political tensions, the Osun State House of Assembly has alleged that the state’s APC chapter is plotting to incite violence following the Appeal Court judgment.

Speaker Adewale Egbedun, in a statement obtained by DAILY POST on Monday, called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure professionalism and neutrality in securing Osun State.

The Assembly further accused former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola—now Minister of Marine and Blue Economy—of using his federal position to influence security agencies.

“We must not allow Osun to descend into chaos like Rivers State,” the statement warned.

APC Fires Back, Accuses PDP of Undermining Judiciary

Reacting to the allegations, Osun APC’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, criticised the Speaker for blaming Oyetola, stating that the party has always followed legal processes to seek justice.

“It is uncharitable for the Speaker to accuse Oyetola, now a federal minister, of destabilising Osun,” Olabisi said. “Why does the PDP only accept court decisions when they are in their favour?”

The APC further accused the PDP-led government of violating legal provisions and attempting to undermine the judiciary.

With political tensions rising ahead of the February 22 polls, all eyes remain on the Supreme Court’s next move and the actions of security agencies in maintaining peace in Osun State.
