Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has revealed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may soon dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Okowa, who served as Atiku’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election under the PDP, made the disclosure during an interview on Arise News on Tuesday. This comes shortly after Okowa’s own defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) last week.
Responding to questions about whether he had informed Atiku of his decision to leave the PDP, Okowa said he had communicated his intentions before attending a series of stakeholders and leadership meetings to determine his next political move.
“I actually did communicate with him that we were going to have stakeholders meetings last week, and the outcome would determine our next path because we were no longer comfortable with the PDP,” Okowa said.
He added, “I also know that he [Atiku] is already heading out of the PDP from the communications he has passed on to me, and that Nigerians know already.”
Okowa’s remarks come amid growing speculation about Atiku’s future in the party, especially after a high-profile announcement on March 20, 2023. On that day, Atiku, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others declared the formation of a political coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
The development has intensified conversations around a potential grand opposition alliance, with political watchers keenly observing the shifting alignments ahead of 2027.
