In a bid to resolve the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, the Dim Uchechukwu Nnam Okwukwu-led Ohanaeze Ndigbo has urged President Bola Tinubu to establish a high-level peace committee, chaired by elder statesman Chief Ebitu Ukiwe.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST on Monday, Okwukwu commended the President’s decision to appoint Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired vice-admiral, as the sole administrator of Rivers State. He expressed confidence that Ibas would uphold the principles of justice, humanity, and the rule of law.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural organization, emphasized the need for an inclusive peace process, calling for key ethnic groups in Rivers State to be represented on the proposed committee.
“It’s important that the affected communities are part of the resolution process,” Okwukwu stated. “We propose that the Ikwerre, Ijaw, and Ogoni people each nominate a representative. Excluding those directly impacted would undermine the effectiveness of the committee’s resolutions.”
He stressed that Chief Ebitu Ukiwe, a former Chief of General Staff, possesses an in-depth understanding of the region’s history and dynamics, making him an ideal candidate to lead the peace efforts.
Okwukwu also lauded President Tinubu’s decision to appoint a Niger Delta native as the sole administrator, rather than selecting an outsider.
“The President had the liberty to appoint someone from any part of Nigeria, but he chose someone who understands the region’s complexities. This decision will foster trust and ensure a more effective conflict resolution process,” he remarked.
The Ohanaeze leader further called on all Igbo residents in Rivers State, as well as other non-indigenous communities, to support the state administration and maintain peace. He urged all parties involved in the crisis to uphold the rule of law and respect existing agreements to prevent further escalation.
Additionally, Okwukwu advocated for the recognition of the Martin Amaehule-led House of Assembly, highlighting that 27 out of 30 lawmakers constitute an overwhelming majority. He also called for the prompt payment of their outstanding salaries.
Expressing hope for a swift resolution, he prayed that within six months, normalcy would be restored, leading to the lifting of the state of emergency in Rivers State.
