A chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Asiwaju Moshood Shittu, has cautioned the party’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, against hastily entering into any political alliance or merger ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja over the weekend, Shittu—who previously served as Director-General (North) of the Kwankwaso Presidential Campaign Council—warned that any hurried merger without a clear agenda or a credible presidential candidate could result in a “marriage of inconvenience.”
Drawing parallels with the 2014 political merger that led to the defeat of former President Goodluck Jonathan, he argued that such alliances, when not carefully structured, often lead to governance failures and unintended consequences.
Shittu urged Kwankwaso to critically assess any potential coalition, emphasizing the need to scrutinize the credibility of proposed candidates, the coalition’s governance blueprint, and its long-term vision. He noted that most opposition coalitions in Nigeria fail due to a lack of ideological clarity and shared purpose.
Stressing the importance of prioritizing the interests of the Nigerian people over political maneuvering, he warned that history would harshly judge any ill-advised decision.
“Nigeria cannot afford another gamble in its leadership,” he concluded.
