LP Crisis Deepens as Anambra Governorship Aspirant Withdraws Hours to Primary

The race for the Labour Party’s governorship ticket in Anambra State took a dramatic turn on Friday, as frontline aspirant, Mr. John Nwosu, announced his withdrawal from the party’s primary election scheduled for Saturday, April 5.

Nwosu, who was expected to face off against former National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) boss, Dr. George Moghalu, cited glaring irregularities in the conduct of the primary process, including the last-minute submission of a tampered delegates’ list and the absence of valid congresses in the 21 local government areas of the state.

In a strongly-worded letter announcing his withdrawal, Nwosu decried what he described as “illegalities and indecent conduct” by Labour Party officials at both national and state levels. He accused the party of violating its own constitution, as well as INEC guidelines.

“The Supreme Court unequivocally sacked Barr. Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party today, April 4, 2025. The implication is that anything Barr. Abure superintended since his tenure expired cannot stand judicial scrutiny. This includes most activities leading up to the Anambra State Governorship Primaries,” Nwosu stated.

He added that no legitimate delegates’ congresses were conducted in the state, yet a controversial list of delegates was produced and altered multiple times before being posted just eight hours ahead of the primary.

Describing the entire process as a “charade,” Nwosu said participating in the exercise would be a betrayal of his values.

“I am convinced that my participation in the primary will lend credence to illegality, erosion of due process and also offend my sense of integrity, Christian values and principles,” he declared.

Nwosu’s withdrawal further deepens the crisis rocking the Labour Party, which has been grappling with internal disputes and legal battles. His exit leaves Dr. Moghalu as the likely frontrunner for the party’s ticket, pending any further developments.

He, however, assured his supporters that he remains committed to credible and transparent political engagement in the future.

“I stand ready to serve and participate in future political processes that are credible, transparent and fair,” Nwosu affirmed.
