As preparations gear up for the November 2 local government elections in Nasarawa State, the ruling All Progressives Congress has announced that it will begin its primary elections for councillorship positions on October 14, 2024.
According to the party, the primaries for chairmanship candidates across the 13 local government areas of the state will follow on October 16.
The APC State Chairman, Aliyu Bello, made the disclosure on Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Lafia. The meeting, according to Bello, was convened to discuss the modalities for selecting the party’s flag-bearers for both chairmanship and councillorship seats.
However, Bello noted that the party has yet to decide whether the primaries will be conducted through consensus, direct, or indirect methods.
He revealed that the sales of expression of interest forms for aspirants eyeing the chairmanship and councillorship positions would commence from October 7 to October 10. The screening of candidates is scheduled to take place from October 10 to 12.
“The timetable for the election has just been released by the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission, in line with the State Local Government Law of 2018 (as amended),” Bello said.
“As you all know, our party will fully participate in the elections, with zeal, spirit, and unwavering commitment to emerge victorious.”
Bello urged APC stakeholders to approach the forthcoming elections with seriousness to secure victory for the party.
Speaking at the meeting, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the APC retains the governorship in 2027, when his second term comes to an end.
Sule took the opportunity to appreciate former governors, Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Senator Umaru Al-Makura, for their continued presence and support at party meetings, despite their busy schedules.
