The Labour Party (LP) has announced the indefinite suspension of six prominent members, including Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, over alleged anti-party activities.
Others affected are Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, Hon. Amobi Ogah, and Hon. Seyi Sowunmi.
The decision followed the submission of a report by a disciplinary panel set up on May 2, 2025, by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). The five-man committee, chaired by Deputy National Chairman Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, investigated alleged misconduct by Otti and other party leaders.
In a statement released on May 7, the LP’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, confirmed that the party leadership deliberated and ratified the panel’s recommendations.
“By this suspension, these former members of the party will no longer act for and on behalf of the party,” Ibrahim stated, adding that relevant bodies including INEC, the National Assembly, and security agencies have been duly notified.
Meanwhile, the party clarified that Nenadi Usman was not included in the suspension list as she is not a registered member of the LP. According to the party, Usman belongs to a support group aligned with its 2023 presidential campaign but has since pledged loyalty to another party.
The LP further accused Usman of lacking moral standing to speak on corruption, citing alleged involvement in plea bargains with the EFCC and ownership of questionable assets both in Nigeria and abroad.
On the party’s future, the statement reaffirmed that the LP would not participate in any coalition or merger talks ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The party intends to prosecute the 2027 general election as a stand-alone entity. No further discussions on mergers or coalitions will be entertained,” the statement concluded.
This move marks a significant shakeup within the Labour Party as it seeks to assert discipline and internal cohesion ahead of future political contests.
