The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr. Julius Abure, has declared that the upcoming governorship election in Anambra State will serve as a litmus test for the party’s anticipated success in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking at a forum in Awka, the Anambra State capital, on Sunday, Abure, who was represented by the party’s National Women Leader, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, emphasized the party’s resolve to consolidate its presence across the nation. The event, organized by the Directorate of Mobilization and Integration (DMI), brought together aspirants and delegates ahead of the primary election scheduled for Saturday.
“We want to use Anambra to test what 2027 will be,” Abure stated. “The Labour Party has grown beyond a briefcase party. We are present in all the states of Nigeria and Abuja, and we are gearing up not just for Anambra but also for 2027.”
He urged party members to remain united regardless of the outcome of the primaries, stressing that internal conflicts should not weaken the party’s resolve to secure victory in the November governorship election.
“After the primary election this Saturday, no one is permitted to be angry. We must all join hands to win the main election in November. Let us remain strong and united, as nothing will be impossible for us to achieve,” he added.
Highlighting the strategic importance of Anambra, Abure noted that the forum was organized to foster interaction between the aspirants and the delegates, while also solidifying the party’s grassroots presence.
Among the aspirants present were Dr. George Moghalu and Mr. John Nwosu, both of whom addressed party members, presenting their manifestos and vision for Anambra.
Dr. Moghalu pointed out that the root problem in the state was a loss of public trust in government, compounded by insecurity and the forceful collection of taxes through thuggery. He advocated for a more transparent and efficient tax system that would inspire voluntary compliance.
“People no longer trust government; security has collapsed, and thugs are used to enforce taxes. If the government does the right thing, citizens will willingly pay their taxes without being chased around. Tax collection can also be digitized for better efficiency,” Moghalu stated.
The Labour Party remains resolute in planting its presence at every polling unit in Anambra, as it sets its sights on a transformative electoral journey toward 2027.
