Labour Party Extends Membership Registration

Abuja, Nigeria – The Labour Party (LP) has extended its ongoing membership registration and revalidation exercise until May, according to a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, on Thursday in Abuja.

Ifoh quoted the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, as saying that the party’s congresses at the ward, local government, and state levels will now take place between June and July.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the validation exercise was initially scheduled to conclude on January 31, while ward congresses were to be held between February and March.

As part of its strategy to surpass 20 million registered members ahead of the 2027 general elections, the LP had earlier launched an online membership registration and validation platform.

Addressing concerns over the upcoming governorship primaries in Anambra, Abure reassured party members that the exercise would be conducted transparently.

“I want to reassure our members in Anambra State that, as is customary with our party, our primaries and congresses will be free, fair, and credible,” he stated.

He emphasized the party’s commitment to internal democracy, rejecting political godfatherism and stressing that credible leadership begins with a fair selection process.

“This party was founded on the ideology of doing things differently. If we must achieve better governance, we must first ensure credible leadership recruitment,” he added.

Abure also dismissed allegations that the LP was working for another political party, asserting that it remains one of the largest political movements in Nigeria.

He reiterated that Nigeria’s progress depends on fostering transparency in leadership selection processes.

“We believe that only when the best candidates emerge from political parties can we have competent leaders to handle the affairs of this nation,” he concluded.
