The Labour Party (LP) has officially announced that former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, will be its presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, expressed confidence in Obi’s candidacy, asserting that President Bola Tinubu would face stiff competition in the next polls.
“Tinubu is not just going to have it easy in 2027. We are coming back with Peter Obi to show them we mean business,” Arabambi stated.
He also addressed the recent resignation of actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo from the party, describing it as a relief. Arabambi accused Okonkwo of working in favor of President Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“We wish Kenneth Okonkwo well. His resignation is good riddance to bad rubbish, and he should refrain from speaking about the Labour Party henceforth,” he said.
Arabambi dismissed claims of leadership crises within the LP, maintaining that the party remains strong and focused on unseating the current administration in 2027.
“There is no leadership crisis in the Labour Party. We are not going into extinction; such rumors are mere imaginations of our detractors,” he added.
Peter Obi, who was the LP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, finished third behind President Tinubu of the APC and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
