Labour Party Caretaker Committee to Seek Supreme Court’s Intervention in Leadership Dispute

The 29-man caretaker committee set up by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has announced its intention to take the leadership dispute within the party to the Supreme Court. This follows the recent decision by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which validated the party’s March 2024 national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, and affirmed Julius Abure as the authentic National Chairman of LP.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the committee, led by National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman and National Secretary Darlington Nwokocha, expressed its dissatisfaction with the appellate court’s ruling. The committee contended that the judgment raised critical issues that only the Supreme Court could clarify.

Senator Usman confirmed the committee’s decision to challenge the Court of Appeal’s verdict, citing the ambiguities in the ruling handed down on November 13, 2024, and January 17, 2025. She stated, “We have instructed our lawyers to seek further clarification from the Supreme Court to resolve these issues.”

The dispute stems from a leadership crisis within the Labour Party, which led to the National Executive Committee (NEC) voting to remove Abure as National Chairman. In response, the party formed a 29-member caretaker committee, chaired by Senator Usman, to fill the leadership void. The decision was made following an expanded stakeholders’ meeting held in Umuahia, chaired by Peter Obi and hosted by Governor Otti.

In its judgment, the Court of Appeal upheld a previous ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize Abure’s leadership and grant the LP all rights and privileges afforded a registered political party. Justice Hamma Barka, leading the three-member panel, found no grounds to overturn the earlier decision in Abure’s favor.

The caretaker committee has called on its supporters to remain patient as it pursues the matter in the Supreme Court, seeking a resolution to the ongoing leadership dispute within the Labour Party.
