Kwankwaso No Longer a Member of NNPP Since 2023 – Party Chairman Declares

The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Agbo Gilbert Major, has stated unequivocally that former presidential candidate and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is no longer a member of the party.

Speaking during an interview on Daily Politics aired on Trust TV, Major emphasized that Kwankwaso ceased being a recognised member of the NNPP as far back as June 2023, based on the party’s constitution and court rulings from both the Abia High Court and the FCT High Court.

“Kwankwaso is now part of NNPP’s history,” Major said. “At a point, he came in, and at a point, he left with his Kwankwasiyya Movement. So I don’t want to talk about him.”

When asked about defections from the NNPP, Major acknowledged that several prominent politicians who were instrumental to the party’s success—particularly in Kano—had left. However, he attributed their departure not to issues with the NNPP itself but to dissatisfaction with the internal workings of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

“These were active members of the Kwankwasiyya structure, and they felt disillusioned with how it was being run,” he explained.

Reacting to Kwankwaso’s reported relationship with the Presidency, Major dismissed concerns, saying, “Why should I be worried about someone who has not been a member of our party for over a year? He is at liberty to go wherever he wants. We have no business with him.”

The NNPP chairman stressed that his focus remains on repositioning the party and strengthening its structures ahead of future elections.

“Let us focus on issues that will enhance our operational capacity,” Major concluded.
