The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed claims made by former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, regarding his intentions to significantly reduce the party’s votes in the state during the 2027 elections.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the APC’s state chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, responded to Kwankwaso’s assertions, labeling them as “laughable” and advising the former governor to focus on re-establishing his membership in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), from which he was reportedly expelled. Abbas further criticized Kwankwaso, calling him a “political refugee” and accusing him of attempting to latch onto the current state governor, Abba Yusuf, in a bid to remain relevant in Nigerian politics.
“We urge Kwankwaso to stop daydreaming and face reality. His misplaced confidence in reducing the APC’s votes in Kano State is nothing but wishful thinking,” Abbas said. “Our party remains the people’s choice.”
Abbas also alleged that the NNPP’s performance in the 2023 elections was largely the result of “manipulated votes,” warning that such tactics would not be tolerated in future elections. He emphasized that APC supporters had no reason to be concerned about Kwankwaso, who he claimed had been ousted from the NNPP due to his “cluelessness and self-centeredness,” leaving him politically homeless.
“Kwankwaso left the APC because he couldn’t align with our progressive ideals. His inflated ego also led him to abandon the PDP. Now, even the NNPP has rejected him, and he is left without a political home,” Abbas stated.
Assuring Kano residents of the APC’s plans for the 2027 elections, Abbas expressed confidence that the party would reclaim the state and “liberate the people from Kwankwaso’s undue influence,” which he attributed to Kwankwaso’s “castle” on Miller Road.
The APC chairman’s comments were in response to remarks made by Kwankwaso during a meeting with stakeholders from Tsanyawa Local Government Area at his residence in Kano. At the meeting, Kwankwaso claimed that his team’s efforts during the 2023 elections had significantly weakened the influence of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reducing its votes in the state to just 15,000.
“We achieved this remarkable feat despite being a new party and starting our campaign late. Now, it’s our turn to diminish the APC. We will work tirelessly to ensure their votes in Kano are reduced to less than 15,000 in 2027,” Kwankwaso declared.
The former governor also stated that he had recently received a group of former councillors and senior special advisers from the Abdullahi Ganduje-led administration, who had pledged their allegiance to his camp in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
