In a significant political development in Oyo State, hundreds of former members of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) have defected to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), signaling a shift in political dynamics as the 2027 general elections draw near.

The defectors were officially welcomed at a reception organized by John Ogunsola, an aspirant for the House of Representatives. Ogunsola, a PDP member, lauded Governor Seyi Makinde for his transformative leadership, which he credited as a driving force behind the influx of new members into the PDP. He emphasized the need for unity and grassroots support within the party, urging all members to collaborate in strengthening the PDP’s position as the elections approach.

“We must embrace our new members with open arms and work together to ensure our state continues to progress,” Ogunsola said during his address.

Mukaila Adegbola, the PDP chairman for Oluyole Local Government, also welcomed the defectors, congratulating them on their decision to join the ruling party. He reassured them that the PDP, under the leadership of Governor Makinde, offers opportunities for growth and development, positioning it as the party of choice for citizens seeking genuine dividends of democracy.

Adegbola attributed the success of Governor Makinde’s administration as a key factor in attracting the new members, noting the positive impact of the government’s policies on the state’s growth.

Representing the defectors, Dauda Hamsat Awayewaserere expressed their admiration for Governor Makinde’s leadership and highlighted the significant achievements of his administration as the primary reason behind their defection. Awayewaserere assured the PDP leadership of their full support and loyalty, adding that more former SDP members were expected to join the party in the coming months.

The new members pledged to work diligently to strengthen the PDP’s presence at both the local government and state levels. They expressed their commitment to contributing to the party’s growth and success, emphasizing their dedication to making the PDP a more influential force in the region.

The influx of new members marks a significant boost for the PDP as the state gears up for the 2027 elections, with the party poised to continue its efforts to expand its influence and deliver on its promises of development and good governance.
