The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has called on wealthy individuals in Anambra State to refrain from using their financial influence to destabilize the party ahead of its governorship primary scheduled for April 5, 2025.
Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja during a courtesy visit by a support group, Booth to Booth with Bola Tinubu, Ganduje emphasized the party’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, and transparent primary election.
He urged stakeholders to support the process rather than engage in practices that could undermine party unity.
“As a party, if we are to have a successful primary in Anambra, all our stakeholders must embrace a renewed commitment to due process. This time around, business should not be as usual,” Ganduje stated.
Acknowledging the financial strength of some party members in the state, he urged them to channel their resources toward the development of both the party and the state rather than using money to create division.
“They should not use their wealth to destabilize the state but to develop it and strengthen APC. In fact, if they can produce a consensus candidate, I will personally give them an award,” he added.
On the mode of primary election to be adopted, Ganduje assured that the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC), in consultation with the party’s leadership, would determine the most suitable approach—whether direct or indirect primaries.
Earlier, the National Coordinator of Booth to Booth with Bola Tinubu, Mr. Iyke Madu, advocated for an indirect primary due to security concerns in Anambra State. He noted that even the state government had been unable to conduct local government elections because of insecurity.
“There is a serious security challenge in Anambra at the moment. The state government has officially notified some communities that elections cannot be conducted due to the situation,” Madu explained.
He argued that if the state government could not conduct its local government elections for security reasons, it would be difficult for a party that does not control the state to organize a direct primary.
“Our constitution provides for indirect primaries, and we are appealing to the party leadership to consider this option,” he added.
The APC’s decision on the primary format is expected to shape the party’s preparations for the Anambra governorship election.
