Ex-APC Chieftain George Moghalu Joins Labour Party, Eyes Anambra Governorship

Former National Auditor of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. George Moghalu, has officially joined the Labour Party (LP) and purchased the party’s ₦30 million Expression of Interest and Nomination forms to contest the Anambra off-cycle governorship election slated for November 8, 2025.

Moghalu, who previously served as the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) under former President Muhammadu Buhari, resigned from the APC on August 27, 2023.

Speaking at the LP National Secretariat in Abuja after receiving the nomination forms from the party’s chairman, Julius Abure, Moghalu expressed confidence in clinching the LP ticket and defeating the incumbent governor, Charles Soludo.

Before presenting the forms, Abure assured aspirants of a transparent and credible primary election in Anambra, emphasizing that party members—not external influences—would determine the flag bearer.

“I want to assure you that you have taken the right decision. The Anambra State primary will be free, fair, and credible. Party members in Anambra will determine who becomes the governorship candidate. Abuja will not dictate the process,” Abure stated.

He further urged Moghalu to engage with LP members at the grassroots level, noting that securing the party’s ticket required extensive consultations and commitment.

In his response, Moghalu expressed gratitude to the LP leadership for accepting him into the party and vowed to run a campaign that aligns with the party’s values.

“For me, it is a privilege to run under the platform of LP. It is not just about purchasing forms but being accepted by the party and its members,” Moghalu said.

He described his decision to leave the APC as a strategic political move, driven by consultations with his supporters and an assessment of the political realities in Anambra.

“I have always remained in one party since the inception of this democratic dispensation, but I had to leave for LP because, in politics, two things matter: the party and the person. After due consideration, LP was the best option for me,” he added.

Moghalu assured the party of his unwavering loyalty and promised to uphold its principles.

“I will not betray the confidence reposed in me. I will go with LP, I will win with LP, and I will represent LP very well,” he declared.

As the Anambra 2025 race heats up, Moghalu’s defection adds another layer of intrigue to the contest, setting the stage for a high-stakes battle against Governor Soludo and other contenders.
