Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has officially announced his departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal party issues as his reason for defecting to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, El-Rufai disclosed that he consulted former President Muhammadu Buhari before making his decision.
“I left the APC with his full knowledge. I visited him on a Friday and informed him of my decision because I always consult with him on all my matters,” he said.
When asked about political godfathers, El-Rufai acknowledged Buhari’s influence, stating, “My first godfather is Muhammadu Buhari. As for the others, I won’t mention them to avoid pressure.”
El-Rufai, a founding member of the APC, played a key role in the party’s formation and its rise to power. His defection marks a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 elections.
