Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has claimed that the Labour Party (LP) is grappling with internal crises fueled by hired mercenaries. According to El-Rufai, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, disclosed this to him personally.
Speaking during the National Conference for Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria held in Abuja, El-Rufai said Obi confided in him about challenges within the Labour Party, similar to those in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“There are internal mercenaries in the PDP, hired and motivated to destroy the party. The Labour Party is also facing similar issues. Peter Obi himself told me, ‘I don’t know what’s happening in the party I contested with,’” El-Rufai stated.
The former governor also expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party he helped establish. He revealed that no organ of the APC had convened in the last two years, leading him to question the party’s direction.
El-Rufai criticized the APC for deviating from its founding principles, asserting that the party was initially created to address specific national issues but has since failed to fulfill its mission.
The comments from the former governor come amid growing discussions about internal party dynamics and the state of political parties in Nigeria’s democracy.
