The Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Maria Oligbi-Edeko (PDP – Esan North East II), has voluntarily resigned from her position, citing the minority status of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Assembly as the primary reason for her decision.

Oligbi-Edeko, who was elected Deputy Speaker on June 16, 2023, announced her resignation during plenary, expressing a desire to uphold justice, fairness, and equity for all constituencies represented in the House.

“I resigned in the interest of equity and justice,” she stated, while also expressing gratitude to PDP leaders and constituents for the opportunity to serve.

Following her resignation, lawmakers from both parties took turns to commend her integrity, leadership, and dedication to public service, describing her as a committed legislator who left a significant mark on the legislative process.

In a unanimous decision, the Assembly elected Mr. Osamwonyi Atu (APC – Orhionmwon East) as the new Deputy Speaker.

Subsequently, the Majority Leader, Hon. Jonathan Aigbokhan (APC – Esan West), moved a motion that all entitlements due to the office of the Deputy Speaker be granted to the former occupant. The motion, seconded by Minority Leader Charity Airobarueghian (PDP – Ovia North East I), received unanimous support from the House.
