Former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, has called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to prioritize unity and stability within the party amid growing internal crises and defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at the South-South Zonal Congress in Calabar over the weekend, Duke emphasized the need for focus and resilience, expressing optimism that the PDP can reclaim power if members work together.
“I want to implore us to be focused and steadfast. There is no amount of struggle we cannot surmount,” Duke stated.
Meanwhile, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, addressed the congress, defending his role in the APC-led federal government and dismissing accusations of anti-party activities.
Wike insisted he had consulted PDP stakeholders before accepting the ministerial appointment and criticized the party’s leadership for alleged double standards.
“You have a BoT chairman who said he has no regrets in praising and supporting the LP governor in Abia State,” Wike noted. “The National Working Committee never rebuked the PDP Governors Forum chairman for celebrating a governor from another party. You see hypocrisy.”
The former Rivers State governor declared that no one could intimidate or oppress him, reiterating his commitment to standing by his decisions.
“I will continue to fight until the right thing is done and seen to have been done,” Wike affirmed.
He also revealed that his support for President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 elections stemmed from an agreement among Southern PDP leaders to back a Southern candidate.
“We agreed that we should support a Southern President in 2023. That is why I ensured Tinubu won the election,” Wike concluded.
