In a dramatic turn of events that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the country’s ruling party.
The announcement came after a high-level closed-door meeting held at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday. Confirming the development, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, told Vanguard in a phone conversation that the move marks a significant shift in Delta State’s political direction.
In a parallel development, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa also formally joined the APC. His defection was announced by Senator James Manager, who addressed journalists following a marathon six-hour meeting of PDP stakeholders in the state.
“All PDP members in Delta, including Governor Oborevwori, former Governor Okowa, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, the party chairman, and all local government chairmen, have unanimously agreed to join the APC,” Manager disclosed. “We cannot continue to be in a sinking boat.”
According to party insiders, the decision followed weeks of intense consultations with key political stakeholders. The move, they say, is aimed at aligning with the federal government to accelerate the development agenda of Delta State.
Governor Oborevwori, who was elected in 2023 under the PDP platform, was warmly received into the APC fold by top party officials. Political analysts have described the defection as a strategic realignment that could reshape the political dynamics in the South-South region ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The mass exodus of Delta’s PDP leadership marks one of the most significant political shifts in the state’s recent history.
