Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the party, declaring that he will never leave despite ongoing internal crises.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, George dismissed concerns over recent defections, insisting that the PDP remains the only party in Nigeria with strong ideological principles and internal democracy.
“I can’t leave PDP, I can’t. Every other party is like a miniature congregation of strange bedfellows. They do not have the principles that we have in our party,” he stated. “Why would I leave reality for others? I would rather go home because I believe so much in the principles of the party.”
Amid growing internal tensions, some party chieftains have defected, citing leadership struggles. However, George believes these individuals were never truly committed to the party.
He argued that the PDP’s resilience is rooted in its democratic values, citing the failed presidential bids of late party stalwart Chief Alex Ekwueme as proof that the PDP is not built around any individual.
“Ekwueme contested against Obasanjo, and when he lost, he accepted defeat with dignity. He never attempted to demonize or destroy the party,” George said, praising the late politician’s legacy of selflessness and dedication.
Reacting to the defections of notable figures like Mr. Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, George dismissed suggestions that their absence had weakened the party. Instead, he emphasized that what PDP truly needs is a revival of the founding fathers’ progressive politics and commitment to unity.
He expressed confidence that the party would overcome its challenges and emerge stronger, urging members to prioritize the collective interest of the PDP over personal ambitions.
“A rolling stone gathers no moss. If we have a crisis in the party, we will stay and resolve it. We are going nowhere,” he declared.
Despite the turbulence within the PDP, George remains steadfast, insisting that unity and legacy-building are key to the party’s future success.
