Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has sparked speculation about a potential political realignment, suggesting that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, may join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
El-Rufai made the statement while responding to a post on X (formerly Twitter), where a user argued that the SDP would struggle to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections without Obi’s involvement. In response, Bashir simply wrote: “He is coming.”
In a follow-up post, Bashir expressed a shift in his perception of Obi, stating:
“Peter Obi is surprisingly not a bad person after all. My views on him have changed recently. My mind was poisoned by my former party members. Sai Obi!”
His remarks have fueled widespread speculation about Obi’s political future, especially in the wake of Nasir El-Rufai’s high-profile resignation from the APC. The former Kaduna governor recently severed ties with the ruling party, citing ideological differences with President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
As political movements intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, Bashir El-Rufai’s comments add a new layer to the evolving landscape, raising questions about potential alliances and shifts within Nigeria’s opposition parties.
