The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has stated that the ruling party is pleased with the ongoing crisis within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasizing that APC is not responsible for the turmoil.
Basiru attributed the internal discord in the PDP to the personal ambitions of certain individuals, dismissing claims by former PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, that APC bribed opposition leaders with ₦50 million each to destabilize the party.
Speaking at the inauguration of unit, ward, and local government canvassers under the Alubarika movement of APC in Osun State on Sunday, Basiru maintained that the ruling party has no reason to fear the opposition.
“The ambition of a few individuals is what is causing the rift within the opposition party, and it is to our advantage as a ruling party if they fail to resolve their internal issues. It is not our responsibility to help them put their house in order,” he said.
Meanwhile, the leadership crisis within the PDP deepened last week as two party chieftains, Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye, clashed over the position of National Secretary.
The Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu had declared Ude-Okoye as the substantive National Secretary following the vacancy left by Anyanwu, who stepped aside to contest the Imo State governorship election.
However, the situation took another turn as Anyanwu challenged Ude-Okoye’s authority to assume the position, insisting that his appeal at the Supreme Court necessitates maintaining the status quo.
The dispute led to a major stir at a recent PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting held at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, further highlighting the deepening divisions within the opposition party.
