The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Federal Government to release federal allocations for Osun State local governments only to chairmen reinstated by the Court of Appeal, rejecting the recent local government elections conducted by Governor Ademola Adeleke as “illegal and unconstitutional.”
In a statement on Sunday, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, condemned the fresh polls held last Saturday, labeling them a “disgraceful sham” orchestrated by Adeleke and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Court of Appeal had, on February 10, 2025, overturned a previous Federal High Court ruling that had nullified the elections of local government officials, reinstating the sacked chairmen dismissed by Adeleke’s 2022 executive order.
Morka criticized the governor for defying the appellate court’s ruling, questioning Adeleke’s commitment to his oath to uphold the Constitution. “Why is the Governor so desperate to incite anarchy in Osun State by disregarding a valid judgment?” Morka asked, further accusing Adeleke of provoking unrest and wasting public funds through the disputed elections.
The APC highlighted its own restraint during the legal battle, opting for court processes rather than self-help or violence. Morka stressed that the swearing-in of the newly elected officials by Adeleke poses a “renewed threat to peace and safety” in Osun.
The party urged the Federal Government to withhold local government allocations from any officials not recognized by the Court of Appeal. “Governor Adeleke is constitutionally bound to respect and implement binding court judgments, irrespective of his personal or political preferences,” Morka stated.
The political standoff has raised tensions in Osun, with the APC warning of potential unrest if the court’s ruling continues to be ignored.
