APC, Labour Party Exchange Heated Words Over Alleged Threat to Peter Obi’s Life

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, have engaged in a fierce war of words following claims of a threat to the former Anambra State governor’s life. The controversy erupted after an interview on Arise Television on Sunday, where APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, accused Obi of trying to destabilize the government with his recent criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a passionate defense, Morka alleged that Obi had “crossed the line” in his rhetoric and was attempting to incite Nigerians against the government. Morka warned that Obi should be prepared for “whatever he gets,” implying consequences for his actions. He described Obi’s remarks as reckless and unfounded, accusing him of being maliciously deceptive in his approach to the current administration.

However, Obi’s supporters swiftly condemned the comments, with Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, warning the APC against any attempts to intimidate Obi or arrest him. Tanko argued that any such actions would backfire, provoking a strong response from Nigerians who are already disillusioned with the current government’s perceived disregard for democratic principles.

Tanko emphasized that Obi’s criticisms were legitimate and centered on national issues that affect all Nigerians. He further called on security agencies to investigate Morka’s comments, stating that threats like these should not go unnoticed.

Obi himself also responded to the controversy, expressing dismay over the threats directed at him and his family following his New Year message. In a statement shared on his official social media account, Obi questioned whether his message, which he viewed as a call for better governance, warranted such a response. He reaffirmed his commitment to speaking truth to power, despite the risks, and warned that the country was increasingly shifting towards an authoritarian regime that stifles free expression.

In contrast, APC’s National Publicity Director, Bala Ibrahim, downplayed the situation, claiming that Morka’s words were not threatening or insulting. He urged Obi to exercise restraint and to guide his supporters in maintaining decorum in political discourse.

The ongoing verbal confrontation highlights the deepening tensions between the ruling APC and the Labour Party, as the nation continues to grapple with the aftermath of the 2023 election and the broader political landscape.
