A former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kola Ologbondiyan, has raised concerns over what he describes as an imminent implosion within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that the party may be unable to withstand the fallout.
Speaking on Channels Television on Monday, Ologbondiyan cautioned that the influx of defectors from other political parties, including governors and lawmakers, may eventually destabilize the APC.
According to him, the internal divisions within the APC today are worse than those experienced by the opposition during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Even under the almighty Buhari, the opposition parties were not so fragmented. Let me tell you something and help me tell Nigerians,” he said.
“I want to assure them: the implosion that is coming in the All Progressives Congress, they will not be able to handle it.”
He pointed to lingering fractures within the party’s legacy components — the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) — both of which merged to form the APC in 2013.
“President Tinubu brought ACN into the APC, are they united today? They are fragmented. Former President Muhammadu Buhari brought the CPC into the APC, are they united today? They are fragmented,” Ologbondiyan added.
He further criticized the ruling party for focusing on defections from the PDP without considering the instability within its own ranks.
“They are talking about the PDP today and saying, ‘Oh, governors are leaving’ — do you know who will leave your party tomorrow? You don’t know,” he warned.
His comments come on the heels of recent defections to the APC, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and several federal and state lawmakers.
