The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Felix Morka, has dismissed claims that the ruling party is attempting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
Speaking on The Morning Show on Arise Television on Thursday, Morka addressed concerns over the recent wave of defections from opposition parties to the APC, insisting that such movements do not signal any intention to undermine Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
He recalled that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), during its time in power, controlled over 28 states without raising concerns about one-party dominance.
“Many of these people are coming in and saying they want to be part of the process, to identify with what the APC represents. There’s nothing wrong with that,” Morka said.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s constitutional framework guarantees political pluralism, adding that altering it to create a one-party system would be virtually impossible.
“As a country, our Constitution, the Electoral Act, and other laws clearly define Nigeria as a multi-party, pluralist society. We cannot, as a party, go against the force of the Constitution,” he noted.
Morka further stated that the APC’s priority remains protecting its interests within the bounds of democratic principles, and not engineering a collapse of opposition.
“Our focus is not on eliminating opposition, but on strengthening our party and governance,” he said.
His remarks come amid criticism from some quarters over the increasing defections from opposition parties to the ruling APC.
