Fouad Oni, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has issued a stern warning to supporters of the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, urging them not to incite violence or disrupt the peace in Lagos State.
Oni’s comments followed a tense situation at the Lagos State House of Assembly, where operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police took over the premises. The security presence was reportedly aimed at securing the offices of Speaker Mojisola Meranda, Deputy Speaker, and the Clerk of the House, ahead of February 18, following concerns that Obasa may try to reclaim his position as Speaker.
Obasa, who was impeached while on a trip to the United States in January 2025, dismissed the impeachment as unlawful, claiming that due process was not followed. However, a letter signed by the Assembly’s Clerk revealed that the DSS had been requested to enhance security following Obasa’s alleged plans to resume his role.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oni condemned the situation, describing it as a “sad day” for democracy and emphasizing that supporters of Obasa should not escalate tensions. “We will put our lives on the line to defend democracy,” Oni stated, referencing the ongoing political instability in states like Rivers and Osun.
