The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, Chidi Chidebe, has assured party members and supporters that the PDP is fully prepared for the upcoming governorship election scheduled for November.
Chidebe made this known during a meeting with the party’s women leaders at the state secretariat in Awka, where new party uniforms for women were unveiled.
Amid doubts over the PDP’s readiness—especially following the defection of several former aspirants to other parties—Chidebe emphasized the party’s strategic focus on rebuilding and strengthening its foundation ahead of the polls.
“For the past four months since we emerged, our priority has been to reorganize the party and set the right structure to make an impact in the election,” Chidebe stated. “We’re not just aiming to contest; we’re aiming to win. Last time, we came second, but now, we’re focused on coming first.”
Addressing concerns about the wave of defections, Chidebe cautioned against political instability, likening party loyalty to homeownership. “I tell people, don’t leave your house where you’re a landlord to become a tenant elsewhere. Jumping from party to party won’t solve anything. Every political group has its issues—what’s lacking is sportsmanship.”
He referenced former PDP candidate Val Ozigbo’s move from PDP to Labour Party and eventually to APC, noting the challenges politicians face when switching allegiances.
Chidebe also highlighted the development strides in PDP-governed states, contrasting them with Anambra’s current state. “If you compare PDP-led states with Anambra, you’ll see we’re far behind. That’s why Anambra and Nigeria need to return to PDP.”
He urged the party’s women to play an active role, calling on them to form prayer groups and intensify grassroots mobilization.
The Anambra PDP Woman Leader, Mrs. Calista Nkiru Adimachukwu, echoed this sentiment, encouraging women to spearhead membership drives and strengthen the party’s base ahead of the elections.
Chidebe concluded by revealing that several high-profile aspirants are already preparing to contest under the PDP banner, signaling a strong comeback for the party in Anambra.
