…Promises inclusive platform, good governance, and national rebirth
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared itself as the official coalition party for Nigeria’s opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.
National Chairman of the ADC, Ralph Nwosu, made the announcement during the party’s National Executive Committee meeting held in Abuja on Thursday. Speaking through the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mani Ahmed, Nwosu emphasized that the consensus-building process has been rigorous but is now at its final stage.
“This is a momentous occasion,” he said. “By the grace of God, I can categorically inform you that the African Democratic Congress is the coalition party in Nigeria. What remains is simply dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s.”
Nwosu called on all Nigerians who believe in democratic change and national unity to join the ADC, which he described as “the African Democratic Coalition.” He stressed that the party is committed to building an indivisible nation where all citizens can thrive regardless of their location.
Raising concerns about the worsening state of the nation, Nwosu lamented the rising poverty levels and hardship experienced by millions of Nigerians.
“Statistics have indicated that about five million Nigerians are added annually to the list of poverty-stricken people,” he noted. “This is unacceptable for a country richly endowed with resources.”
He added that the solution lies in installing credible leadership through good governance, stating that the ADC has spent two decades laying the groundwork for national transformation.
“Over the past 20 years, we have shown commitment to national growth and patriotism. The ADC has never had the chance to lead, but we believe 2027 holds new possibilities,” Nwosu stated.
He explained that the party has undergone extensive internal reforms to open up its structure and welcome political figures interested in real change. The ADC has also collaborated with civil society and grassroots organizations, believing that “all politics is grassroots politics.”
Nwosu reaffirmed the party’s vision to be a vehicle for democratic rebirth and urged other stakeholders to join in creating a better Nigeria.
The announcement comes amid growing debates about the need for a united opposition front, following an earlier coalition initiative by prominent political figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next election cycle.
